Dear Virginia Brothers and Sisters,
As you know, Virginia will be holding statewide elections on Tuesday, November 3. In advance of these elections, I want to take a moment to highlight the campaign of Steve Shannon, the IAFF/Virginia Professional Fire Fighters (VPFF)-endorsed candidate for Attorney General. On October 26, The Virginian-Pilot emphatically endorsed Steve Shannon for Attorney General. The Pilot's editors praised Shannon's prosecutorial experience and bipartisan record, writing, “His thoughtful approach would preserve the reputation of the state’s law firm as a source of reliable legal advice.” The paper had some harsh words for Shannon's opponent Ken Cuccinelli: “To put it politely, Cuccinelli's election would bring embarrassment to Virginia and instability to the state’s law firm.” The Roanoke Times also endorsed Steve Shannon’s bid for Attorney General. The Times wrote: “When Virginians choose their next attorney general on November 3, they will either continue the level-headed, no-nonsense approach preferred by most previous holders of that office or install an ideological firebrand who would impose his radical morality on the Commonwealth. We recommend they select the former in Steve Shannon.” Click Here to Read the Entire Endorsements from The Virginian-Pilot and The Roanoke Times This race is especially important for Virginia’s professional fire fighters given the stark contrast between the candidates’ records on fire fighter issues. Steve Shannon has a 100 percent voting record on fire fighter issues in the state legislature. On the other hand, Ken Cuccinelli opposes collective bargaining rights for public safety officers and voted against legislation to create a dedicated funding stream for line-of-duty death benefits. A recent internal campaign poll shows this race tightening and has the race within four points. With the number of IAFF members we have in Virginia, we can help make a difference in this race. The IAFF wants to make sure every Virginian knows what the stakes are on November 3. Please forward this to colleagues, friends and family to ensure Virginia has an Attorney General dedicated to making Virginia safer, not pursuing a personal political agenda. Groups and individuals across the Commonwealth and across the political spectrum are rejecting Ken Cuccinelli's divisive personal agenda and giving Steve Shannon the momentum he needs for victory. He can do it, but he can’t do it alone. On November 3, I urge you to vote for Steve Shannon, the IAFF/VPFF candidate for Attorney General. I would also ask that you please consider contributing to Steve Shannon’s campaign today. Click Here to Contribute
Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. Fraternally,
Harold A. Schaitberger General President
